A vintage of fine quality, but with small volumes. It was a rare year, with an early harvest and low yields.
An extraordinary year, in which each parcel expressed itself differently. A relentless climate, with high temperatures and a real lack of water. Know-how, experience and knowledge of the terroir, mastery and adaptation were the keys to success.
On tasting, the intensity, aromatic complexity, structure and freshness of both the red and white wines are faultless. The weather in 2022 gave us both too much and too little. Temperatures were above average throughout the growing season, from the first buds to the harvest.
We started with a dry winter, then continued with an almost arid summer. The sparse rainfall in spring and autumn further increased the water deficit inherited from previous years. Budburst came fairly early after a dry, cool winter. A dry, mild spring followed by a very early, dry and arid summer favoured the production of small, concentrated volumes. There was a marked lack of water during the vegetative period, comparable to the 2003, 2017 and 2019 vintages. There was three times less rain in the spring than usual and only two rainy spells in the summer, well placed in the season but too modest.
The storms of 15 August partly saved this extreme vintage. They brought water at just the right time, followed immediately by the life-saving Mistral wind, which prevented any health problems. However, there was some hail in limited areas, which reduced the quantities available.
The compulsory sorting of the harvest guaranteed the exceptional quality of this early, resilient vintage. Harvesting began on 17 August and lasted two months. Throughout this critical period, the winegrowers had to be particularly vigilant in managing sugar and phenolic maturities in order to control tannins and degree. The suspense was breathtaking, maintained from start to finish to achieve a very fine result.
The whites are rich, complex and long. Intense aromas of white flowers and yellow fruit intertwined with sweet spices, always supported by a freshness to match their generosity. These are fine wines for laying down that can also be enjoyed immediately.
The reds are full-bodied and generous, with rich aromas of red and black fruit (cherry, strawberry, blackberry, blackcurrant), cocoa, pepper and fresh undergrowth. This generous fullness is balanced and supported by an elegant freshness and very silky, tight tannins. The finish is fresh, creamy and very fragrant with hints of fruit, cocoa and undergrowth, and above all very long. An immediate pleasure and a wine worth keeping.
