It is the largest vineyard of the northern appellations, it is located in the Drôme, left bank of the Rhône. A vineyard adjoining that of the Hermitage to the north, it sits on the same type of terroir.
The appellation originally included only the commune of Crozes-Hermitage and later extended to the neighbouring communes. The vineyard is thus in its southern part, more recent than that of the Hermitage: its development began in the 1950s, at the heart of the movement of planting vines in the Rhône Valley, replacing fruit trees.
