Going up the Rhône River which has been one of the main civilization links in the region, the Greeks coming from Marseilles brought vines in the area of Roquemaure : Syrah vines, already!
In the XVIIth Century, Roquemaure was indeed a famous production place, protective of the quality of its wines and forbidding to mix its own wines with others coming from outer vineyards.
In the XVIIIth Century the wooden caskets containing wines Of Roquemaure, Lirac, Tavel, Chusclan and Orsan were branded with the letters “CDR” (Côtes du Rhône), as to guarantee their origin and quality.
Lirac’s wines of Château Saint Roch are very fine, elegant and complex. The whites and the rosés display freshness, minerality and a nice fruitiness when the reds are intense, full-bodied but still elegant, due to the proximity of the Rhône river.
