The 2008 vintage faced a rainy spring in all French vineyards and Chateauneuf du Pape did not escape it.
There was significant coulure and some mildew attacks were seen. The vegetative cycle has been slowed down compared with previous years and the quantities finally obtained have fallen sharply but it was of good quality. The climatic conditions during the harvest period were favourable, alternating Mistral strong wind and cool temperatures despite some stormy episodes. The winegrowers were thus able to wait for the best possible ripeness on the Mourvèdres and Grenaches, which did not occur until the last days of September.
The white Chateauneuf du Pape pinnes vintage 2008 displayed aromas of white flowers and fruits with some freshness. Able to be aged very long time, they now have notes of candied quince and honey, with an elegant finish on dried fruits. To be paired with beautiful matured cheeses.
The 2008 vintage of red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines was characterised by straightforward aromas of fresh fruit and spices (grey pepper, aniseed, liquorice, etc.) and plenty of sweetness, combined with supple, mellow tannins. At full maturity, with aromas of very jammy fruit and weathered leather, the garnet-red colour has beautiful golden highlights, and the palate and finish are all softness and elegance on the fruit in brandy. This red 2008 will go well with red or white meat dishes simmered gently, or a platter of mature cheeses.
