Hermitage

The Hermitage appellation is located on the hill of the Hermitage in the department of Drôme at the level of Tain, on the left bank of the Rhône whose meanders it overlooks.

The name of the vineyard of the Hermitage originates from the story of the Knight of Stérimberg who in 1225, wounded as a result of his battle against the Albigensians, withdrew to this steep hill to build his hermitage (old AOC spelling) and cultivate vineyards.

A few years later he built the famous Chapel dedicated to St. Christopher on the site of a Roman temple. It is one of the most prestigious appellations of the Rhone Valley, its terroir is represented by very diversified soils, which correspond to the different so-called places such as the Bessards, the Méal, the Greffieux, the Dionnières, etc.
