A wet, cool spring followed an exceptionally dry winter. This humidity and a few heavy thunderstorms partly made up for the shortfalls of previous years. The Mistral wind protected us from frost, hail and excess humidity, which caused mildew attacks in other terroirs.
At the end of July, the vines were in exceptionally good health: even the late summer droughts and heatwaves had little impact. Remarkable temperature variations right up to the harvest put the finishing touches to the quality of the 2023 climate. The vegetative phase got off to an excellent start. The foliage developed well, providing shade and coolness as the grapes matured.
There was little water stress, and little impact from the spring frosts and hail until flowering and bunch formation: the summer started in the vineyards with optimal vegetative and health conditions. The alternating cool and warm weather helped to spread out the harvest and ensure that the grapes ripened very well. The natural water supply prevented any blockages in ripening during the very hot phases, and the good day/night temperature differences meant that the vines were able to rest coolly at night. Ripeness was achieved over a longer period, both in terms of sugars and polyphenols, while retaining good acidity. The result was an almost ideal harvest.
The harvest resumed in September. As always, the volumes were fairly modest, but the longer lead times enabled us to obtain a number of nuances and details, with freshness and flavours without over-ripeness.
We were able to innovate for the first time: maturing a parcel of Roussanne in amphora. This grape variety is a benchmark among our old vines. Our different terroirs and climates allow us to reveal all its facets and expressions.
- Our Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 white wines are mineral, intense and elegant. They combine notes of white flowers, yellow fruit and citrus, aniseed and spices with a round, complex intensity and hints of butter. Their richness and balance make them ideal for laying down.
- Our Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 red wines develop great aromatic complexity, freshness and delicacy. Perhaps a little less generous than in drier, hotter years, they stand out for their subtlety woven with intensity.
