The previous autumn and winter were very rainy. The water reserves that ensure regular ripening were particularly well-stocked at the end of spring. These conditions favoured a rapid start to vegetation, for an early vintage. Harvesting began at the end of August.
Thanks to a hot, very dry and windy summer, the grapes obtained were very healthy and colourful, with a very high tannin structure. Very little sorting was necessary. Harvesting went smoothly until the end of October, with modest quantities but exceptional quality.
The 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape whites offered white flowers, fresh, stewed yellow stone fruit, intensity, freshness and length. These wines are evolving towards greater complexity. The bouquet now combines honey, waxed wood and sweet spices with ever jammier fruit. The persistence is still fresh, with hints of dried fruit.
They have retained much of the freshness and tonicity of their youth, while developing a number of mature notes. They go well with festive dishes and large cheese platters.
The 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are concentrated, colourful and generous in their youth, blending aromas of fresh black and red berries with hints of pepper, prune and liquorice. Freshness and astringency on the fruit and spices mark the long, stable finish.
After more than 10 years, these are still wines with marked youth and freshness. The tannins are supple and coated, but still very structured. The aromas have developed with nuances of weathered leather and wood, candied fruit and spices, supported by a warm roundness. The finish is fresh and spicy. Red meats and meats in sauce, game and mature cheeses are all good matches.
