Well before the Christian era, men already drank wine during meals. This drink, a substitute to the godly world and to eternal shapes, presided over inviolable contracts. Pledges exchanged with a goblet in the hand were sacred. An enemy that had shared the extraordinary drink could not be fought. The young woman who gave a goblet to her fiancé could not break her engagement.
